Status of Ebola outbreak in Western Africa as of 8th August 2014    [Posted on: 2014-08-11]



The current EVD outbreak began in Guinea in December 2013. This outbreak now involves transmission in Guinea, Liberia, Nigeria, and Sierra Leone. As of 4 August 2014, countries have reported 1 711 cases (1 070 confirmed, 436 probable, 205 suspect), including 932 deaths. This is currently the largest EVD outbreak ever recorded. There is a report of high incidences of Japanese Encephalitis (JE) in neighbouring states of Assam and West Bengal according to NDTV sources.

This is cautionary note for all the Bhutanese travellers that there is an outbreak of Ebola Virus Disease in following of West African countries, Guinea, Liberia, Nigeria and Sierra Leone.


Ebola Virus Disease (formerly known as Ebola Hemorrhagic Fever) is a severe, often fatal illness, with high death rate of upto 90%. It is one of the world’s most dangerous diseases. There is no specific cure for Ebola Virus Disease.


The infection is transmitted by direct contact with the blood, body fluids and tissues of infected animals or people.
