Ebola Virus Disease, West Africa - Update as of 7 September, 2014    [Posted on: 2014-09-16]

The total number of probable, confirmed and suspected cases in the current outbreak of Ebola virus disease (EVD) in West Africa was 4366, with 2218 deaths, as at 7 September 2014. Over all death rates stand at 51% in the countries with widespread and intense transmission namely Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone. Two countries, Nigeria and Senegal, have now reported a case or cases imported from a country with wide spread and intense transmission.

Backgrounder on WHO Report on Regulation of e-cigarettes and similar products    [Posted on: 2014-09-01]

 

The report on “Electronic nicotine delivery systems” (ENDS), of which electronic cigarettes are the most common prototype, is on the agenda of the 6th Conference of the Parties (COP)  to the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC), being held 13-18 October, 2014, in Moscow.

E-cigarettes and similar devices are frequently marketed by manufacturers as aids to quit smoking, or as healthier alternatives to tobacco, and require global regulation in the interest of public health, this new World Health Organization (WHO) report states.

Ebola Viral Disease (EVD), West Africa - Update as of 28 August 2014    [Posted on: 2014-08-29]

Epidemiology and surveillance

ü  The total number of probable and confirmed cases in the current outbreak of Ebola virus disease (EVD) in the four affected countries as reported by the respective Ministries of Health of Guinea, Liberia, Nigeria, and Sierra Leone is 3 069, with 1 552 deaths.

ü  The outbreak continues to accelerate. More than 40% of the total number of cases has occurred within the past 21 days. However, most cases are concentrated in only a few localities.

ü  The overall case fatality rate is 52%. It ranges from 42% in Sierra Leone to 66% in Guinea.

Ebola Viral Disease (EVD), West Africa - Update as of 26 August 2014    [Posted on: 2014-08-26]

New cases and deaths attributable to EVD comtinue to be reported by the Ministries of Health in Guinea, Liberia, Nigeria, and Sierra Leone. Between 19 and 20 August 2014, 142 new cases(laboratory-confirmed, probable, and suspect cases) of EVD and 77 deaths were reported from the four countries as follows: Guinea, 28 new cases and 10 deaths; Liberia, 110 new cases and 48 deaths; Nigeria, 1 new case and 1 death; and Sierra Leone, 3 new cases and 18 deaths.

New cases and deaths attributable to EVD continue to be reported by the Ministries of Health in Guinea, Liberia, Nigeria, and Sierra Leone. Between 12 and 13 August 2014, 152 new cases (laboratory-confirmed, probable, and suspect cases) of EVD and 76 deaths were reported from the four countries as follows: Guinea, 9 new cases and 3 deaths; Liberia, 116 new cases and 58 deaths; Nigeria, 0 new cases and 1 death; and Sierra Leone, 27 new cases and 14 deaths.

The current EVD outbreak began in Guinea in December 2013. This outbreak now involves transmission in Guinea, Liberia, Nigeria, and Sierra Leone. As of 4 August 2014, countries have reported 1 711 cases (1 070 confirmed, 436 probable, 205 suspect), including 932 deaths. This is currently the largest EVD outbreak ever recorded. Ebola Virus Disease (formerly known as Ebola Hemorrhagic Fever) is a severe, often fatal illness, with high death rate of upto 90%. It is one of the world’s most dangerous diseases. There is no specific cure for Ebola Virus Disease.

 

The infection is transmitted by direct contact with the blood, body fluids and tissues of infected animals or people.
