On 16 December 2015, the Memorandum of Understanding for the Himalayan Cataract Project was signed between Dr. Sanduk Ruit Executive Director, Til Ganga Institute of Ophthalmology, Nepal and Dr.DORJI wangchuk, Hon’ble Secretary, Ministry of Health in the Presence of HE Lyonpo Tandin Wangchuk, Ministry of Health.
Dr Ruit, in the capacity of co-founder and co-director of HCP project came forward to support the Primary Eye Program in Bhutan in the year 2000 and thereafter a five year MoU was signed between RGoB and HCP. Through Dr Ruit’s special gesture and support since 2000, the HCP has been providing financial support of USD $ 100,000 per annum which benefitted in capacity building in ophthalmic human resource, strengthening primary eye care services and infrastructure development. Till then the partnership between HCP and MOH developed deep understanding and trust and, now the project has completed 15 years with the commitment for continued support.The 4th phase of the project is being renewed today for next five years covering 2016 – 2020.
Another very significant contribution made to the Eye care service in Bhutan is in setting up National Eye Bank at JDWNRH and corneal transplant program. So far 25 Bhutanese patients have undergone cornea transplant surgery and got their vision restored.
Dr Ruit’s latest contribution to Bhutan‘s health service is facilitating the support of Australian Cervical Cancer Foundation (ACCF) to provide the vaccine for nation-wide Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) vaccination program.
Hon’ble Minister, on behalf of the RGoB and Health family, conveyed his deep appreciation and acknowledgement to Dr Ruit for his philanthropic support towards strengthening the Primary Eye Care Program in Bhutan.
